Leading an Esports Empire: Meet Team Liquid Co-CEO Steve Arhancet

Steve Arhancet’s story reads less like a business case study and more like the kind of modern epic that could only happen in the internet age. It began in Leesburg, Virginia, where Steve was born and raised in a home with a resident computer thanks to his dad’s work as a computer consultant. That machine became a portal, and what started as playing old games for fun slowly turned into something deeper. Gaming wasn’t just entertainment for Steve—it was curiosity, competition, and connection all rolled into one. As he grew up, that hobby never disappeared. Instead, it matured alongside him.

While building a career in finance, Steve became deeply immersed in League of Legends, a game that was rapidly defining what competitive video gaming—esports—could become. He wasn’t just playing; he was studying the ecosystem, the community, and the energy surrounding it. That curiosity took him to the very first League of Legends World Championships, where the scale and passion of esports became undeniable. In a moment that would change the trajectory of his life, Steve was approached about securing his first sponsorship, a signal that what he loved could actually become something real.

From there, his esports hobby began to grow faster than his corporate career ever could. What started as nights and weekends turned into a full-time obsession, and eventually Steve made the leap that defines true belief: he walked away from his job in finance and committed to esports completely. Almost without realizing it, he found himself doing what owners and executives in traditional sports had done for decades—running a team, building systems, supporting athletes—except his players were gamers competing on a global digital stage.

Along that journey, Steve met Victor, and together they merged their businesses, combining vision and momentum. That partnership led Steve to become Co-CEO of Team Liquid, an organization that had grown out of humble StarCraft forum roots and was ready to become something far bigger. In 2015, Team Liquid made a defining decision to align esports with the rigor and professionalism of traditional sports, intentionally surrounding itself with people who understood legacy, fandom, and long-term success. That philosophy led to working alongside icons like Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Peter Huber (owner of the Golden State Warriors), cementing the idea that esports deserved the same respect as any major league.

Today, Team Liquid stands as one of the most legendary organizations in all of esports, with more than 160 professional athletes competing across dozens of games and a global fanbase that spans continents and cultures. What began as a passion project on a home computer has become a half-billion-dollar global brand, proving that esports is not a niche but a new pillar of professional competition. Steve Arhancet’s journey shows what happens when passion is treated seriously, when curiosity is paired with courage, and when someone is willing to bet on a future before the rest of the world catches up. From Leesburg to the world stage, from hobby to industry, his story is a reminder that the most powerful businesses are often born from the things we love most—and built by those bold enough to believe they matter.
